Global Pharmaceutical Company Sets Communication Strategy Through Employee Input

Situation:

One of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies has a stated objective to be the number one choice for talent who want to make a difference in patient health and wellness. The company recognizes that internal communications play a large role in helping the organization achieve this goal. There was some concern with the current ability to connect with critical groups of talent, specifically the R&D function, worldwide. With a new direction and tough talent goals, there was a need to gather input from employees to inform strategic and tactical changes to the internal communications function.

Approach:

PeopleMetrics conducted a series of executive interviews and electronic focus groups (eFocus™) with employees in the US and Europe to uncover the issues that have the largest impact on perceptions of internal communications. Specifically, the research asked for views on the following items: the current state of communications, preferred communication channels, leadership communication skills, and desired improvements.

Results:

The research led to some tactical and strategic changes to the internal communications function. Tactically, employee and leader input helped the internal communications function develop a set of guidelines for communications channel usage. In addition, opportunities for two-way communication and feedback were introduced to help ensure employees feel they are being heard and their input is valued. A detailed plan for the internal communication function was developed, including a thorough review of the way internal customers are being serviced today as well as the skills and abilities of internal communication staff. A quantitative initiative is planned for the future to gather statistical insight into the perceptions of internal communications and its link to Employee Engagement and performance.
